Carnival in Martinique

The video below is a Carnival parade in Martinique.

The month of January is the start of Carnival in Martinique, and it ends in February with the final and main event. During that time leading up to the main event, each community has its own carnival parade, and it is quite a festive event. The name theme song is always the 'Tamboo,' and people dress up in costumes to display their art, reflecting on their history and culture. The French Antilles Carnival is a bit different from those of the English-speaking Caribbean Islands.

In 2026, the dates for the main events of Carnival are from February 15th to 18th. There are four important days: Dimanche gras, lundi gras, Mardi gras, and Mercredi des cendres.

  • Dimanche Gras begins with parades, often featuring costumes in red.
  • Lundi Gras is a day of making fun of weddings, and men dress up in bridal attire to create a humorous atmosphere.
  • Mardi Gras; the parades are in black and red, but depending on the town, it may be blue and red.

Mercredi des cendres (Ash Wednesday), everyone dresses in black and white for the burial of Vaval, the carnival king. This ends the end of all festivities and the beginning of Lent.

Ok, so a little introduction about Martinique, Martinique is a French speaking Island located in the Caribbean. They speak two different languages, French and Creole, which is sometimes called their mother tongue. the Currency used on the Island is Euros, as it is an extension of France. If you are planning to visit the Island, maybe the Carnival season is the best time for you to visit.

If you want to know more about the Island, I do have a blog where I go into more details about the Island.

On the 24th of January 2026, I attended one of the many community carnivals in Martinique. The energy matched the occasion. Everyone was in good spirits, and the bands were lively, energetic, and in sync with the rhythm of the melodic drums that filled the atmosphere.

I enjoyed every second because every second was truly traditional and entertaining. Unlike most islands that have evolved to how Carnival was once celebrated, Martinique still keeps its tradition in the festivity.

Each band member appeared to be proud to show off their skills, costumes, and representation of their band, culture, and Country. There were people of all ages, races, and genders who seemed to be well accepted.

The City was covered with attendees who came to watch and support the event. The best that I could have done was to stand on the side and try to video the event as much as possible.

On January 30th, 2026, I visited a community Carnival in Vauclin of Martinique; it was one of its 'Community Carnivals,' and it was so entertaining.
Each group of bands used the tamboo, and some also used the 'shak-shak' to create its own rhythm while the band members danced to the sounds for their performance to represent their culture.
They were dressed in unique costumes to represent their theme. To continue, some used bright colours and hairpieces or head attire, while others were as simple as an all-white costume.
The atmosphere was filled with energy, vibrancy, and creativity. Attendees stood on the side line watch, photograpthed and videotaping the performances of the Band.

I must say that the disadvantages that I keep experiencing attending Carnival in  Martinique is people outside of the band keep walking across and in the middle of the performance, blocking the view for others. Inaddition, they have disturbed certain performers and prevented others from taking photos of the performances.

Here are some questions for you;
  1. Have you ever been to a carnival before?
  2. What is your opinion on Carnival in general?
  3. What do you really like or dislike about Carnival?
